Wondering what to do off the slopes during winter in Jackson Hole? With close proximity to the National Elk Refuge, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, winter activities and adventure abound in our valley. Here are some of our favorites.
Things to do in Jackson Hole in Winter Off the Slopes
Experience the Concentrated Winter Wildlife of Jackson Hole!
There’s no better time of year to see densely concentrated herds of moose, elk, bighorn sheep and more than winter! As snow blankets the high mountains which surround the Jackson Hole Valley, wildlife migrate downward towards refuge on the valley floor. Eagles and rough legged hawks migrate to the valley from as far north as the arctic circle in Alaska, while coyote, fox, and wolf hunt for food in the shallow snow. Take a half day or full day wildlife tour with the experienced Naturalists of Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures to see all of the hotspots of Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge.
Cross-Country Ski or Snowshoe Beneath the Teton Range
Though already renowned as a downhill skiing destination, Jackson Hole is a hidden gem with miles of world class cross-country skiing opportunities. 14 miles of groomed trails await you from the Bradley-Taggart Trailhead in Grand Teton National Park, with dozens of additional miles of ungroomed trail off the beaten path.
PSIA certified Nordic Naturalists from Ecotour Adventures can offer tips and tricks on Half Day Beginner Ski Tours or Full day Ski Tours. Snowshoeing opportunities also abound in the park, No matter what you choose, experienced naturalist guides will share information about the wildlife and winter ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, deepening your connection to the landscape.
Sleigh Ride on the National Elk Refuge
Sleigh Rides through wintering elk herd on the National Elk Refuge have been a popular activity since the early 1900’s. First established in 1912, the Refuge protects critical winter habitat for thousands of elk who have migrated here from as far as Yellowstone National Park, over 60 miles to the north. Many opt to combine a sleigh ride with a visit to the nearby Museum of Wildlife Art and a morning wildlife safari; a full day of winter wildlife in Jackson Hole.
Encounter Birds of Prey with the Teton Raptor Center
Local conservation organization the Teton Raptor Center focuses on raptor education, rehabilitation and research in the Jackson Hole area. Visit the Four Seasons Resort on Wednesdays from 4-5pm throughout the winter to learn from some of their educational birds.
Take in Western and Wildlife Art
Visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art, perched above the National Elk Refuge just north of Jackson for a look at some of the best wildlife art in the world. The museum currently features an exhibit by acclaimed wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen, in addition to an extensive gallery of wildlife paintings and sculpture. Take a stroll around Downtown Jackson for even more western and wildlife art galleries.
Enjoy the Culinary Delights of Jackson Hole
Quickly becoming a foodie town, Jackson is home to a diverse assortment of restaurants for fine dining. Visit the Blue Lion for their Famous Rack of Lamb. Glorietta offers some of our favorite Italian cuisine in a fun atmosphere, just a few blocks north of Town square. Beer lovers will enjoy the Melvin Brewing Taps at Thai Me Up. The brewery, which is now the largest in the state of Wyoming has its humble origins here.
